Updated waterhole status
This is the most up to date Kruger map when it comes to waterholes. Closed water holes are indicated in grey, and open waterholes in blue.

Best companion to have in the Kruger - Kruger Self Drive
I get to the Kruger at least once a year and i have a pile of the Kruger booklets maps which i find "OK" but the Kruger Self Drive is really special. The detailed information of each road in the park is really amazing and if you have never been to the park before, this will certainly point you in the right direction and make you stay memorable. If i may make a suggestion to consider for future publications, i am an avid birder and what i think will be really helpful if you could indicate areas where the different species are most likely to be found and which months they are in the park. Just a simple map of the kruger next to each bird just highlighting the area of the park where you are most likely to see the species. If a bird is mainly found in the north, then highlight the northern part of the map in red. Under each bird's name indicate " Oct-Mar" meaning this bird is only in the park from October to March. If the bird is resident in the park, indicate "Resident". And by the way, on my return from Kruger, i use the Kruger Self Drive book as a coffee table book and it is well received by my guests.

Wow, the detail is incredible. Once one has used the Kruger Routes to draw-up a rough idea of the routes you wish to travel, then this volume comes into its own. The detailed information certainly makes the final decision making a lot more enjoyable. We use both before and during our trip. We add personal notes to this volume when something special occurs. This volume and its companion sit side by side during our travels through the park. Great information bearer.

This is a wonderful companion to the main volume Kruger self-drives. We used it to do a quick review of the routes we wanted to cover during each drive. We then moved across to the main volume Kruger Self-drives. I know folk willsay you only need one. In my opinion for ease of planning the lighter Kruger routes is the best starting point as well as the one to use in the car. It is light. To the van den bergs - well presented.
