Let Elephants Roam is an uplifting book about elephants in a time of deep concern, not only for these great, grey giants of the savanna but for the ecological health of nature and the whole planet.
Some 1.4 billion people live in Africa, which could nearly double by 2050. Increasing pressure on the continent’s wildlife refuges and the diversity they harbour seems inevitable. This is the social, political and economic reality of Africa. Development of mega-infrastructure, agriculture, and mining consume wildlife habitat, fragment migratory pathways, and reduce access to food and water sources. This scenario sees elephants and other wildlife confined almost everywhere to ‘islands’ of protected areas in a sea of people and their activities.
Let Elephants Roam is the work of conservation ecologist Rudi van Aarde, who, until his recent untimely death in 2023, was a world-renowned champion of Africa’s remaining savanna elephants. His unshakeable mission was to find a way for elephants to thrive alongside people and their livelihoods. This book is the culmination of Rudi’s determination to show us – scientists, governments, industrialists and ordinary citizens alike – how we can, and must, provide for the spatial needs of elephants.

A wonderful addition for nature lovers. Beautifully written with spectacular photos. Highly recommended. A big thank you to HPH Publishing for providing an excellent service and speedy delivery.
Beautiful book with vital information and inside into the future of wild African elephants hanging in the balance due to unpredictable weather patterns, an increasing human footprint, disconnected wild spaces, unknown ecological advantages, and human ignorance.
I have not yet had the time to page through the book, let alone read the text. But what I have read is extremely interesting and comes from the thoughts of a top-rated scientist. For me as a retired conservation Forester who had some, very limited, contact with the Knysna elephants, the book is a memorable tribute to the work of Rudi van Aarde. The text is thought provoking and the photographs outstanding.
This book has easily understandable text, a concise summary of research into elephants characteristics and needs, and outstanding photographic and graphical illustrations.
Nowadays every person carrying a professional camera and expensive lenses tend to be a wildlife expert and have an opinion on the elephant populations and management criteria in our reserves - often providing simplistic solutions to very complex problems. Then, along comes a book like "Let Elephants Roam" and you realize the value of having quality photographs combined with scientific data that is beautifully presented in a quality book form, by a true expert. This book will be among the finest - and most cherished - in my collection.
